There is a petition asking that evidence based therapeutic practices are not banned for children questioning their gender identity. Any care that is not affirmation only is being conflated with conversion therapy. Therapists should be able to compassionately discuss these issues with patients without being criminalised.

We ask the government not to criminalise essential, explorative therapy. Such well-meaning legislation might ironically deny vulnerable children the help they need.

A recent survey of detransitioners illustrates how young people with dysphoria need help and support. A quote from the report says:

“The results showed important psychological needs in relation to gender dysphoria, comorbid conditions, feelings of regret and internalized homophobic and sexist prejudices.”
